STORY OF BABRI MOSQUE DEMOLITION
This particular
chapter deals with the happenings related to the famous Babri Mosque
demolition. It was 6th December 1992 a structure was destroyed which
few people term it as the birth place of lord Ram, few also term as the Babri
mosque as well. It was one such event which is quite more important that other
event which happened in Indian history. This is also an important happening of
Indian politics as well. what was the reason behind this happening? When did it
all started and was there any conspiracy behind this happening? If there was
any conspiracy, then who were the beneficiaries. During 6th December
1992 Kalyan Singh was the chief minister of the Uttar Pradesh State, the
responsibility of the demolition of Babri mosque which the chief minister
Kalyan Singh was shouldering, it was related to the things started and
established by Mogul empire under the reign of Babar during 1528. The hard-core
Hindu union claims that earlier it was the temple of lord Ram. According to the
record it was for the first time in the year 1853 when the first riot and
agitation occurred for this controversial place. But in 1885 M Raghubar Das
filed a case in the district court and the court gave comment that, as the
mosque was established 356 years ago, it will not be fair to give any verdict
over this case. But the demand of lord Rama’s existence in that particular
place was firstly came to known on 21st and 22nd of
December 1949. It became the mouth piece of everyone in Ajodhya. Then this
thing got the attention from everyone. Then the place was restricted for the
common masses and then Gopal Singh Bisarad went to the district court in 1950.
Then Muslim community also went to court as well to claim their side. For them
it was all planned and a conspiracy to establish the interest of the Hindu’s.
In total four claims were deposited in the court in relation to the same place.
In nutshell the problem was in relation to the ownership of plot no 583 of
Ajodhya, on which the controversial monument was placed. Then another turn came
to that story in 1986 when, the district gave the verdict that the doors should
be open for the Hindu to do worship of their lord. During that point of time
Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister of India. In fact, the verdict was made by
the district court but the way the government implemented the verdict in the
real sense, it raised many questions. The administration took only forty
minutes to carry out the verdict of the district court and most importantly
live coverage was going on of the proceedings of the door opening ceremony of
that controversial place. The decision was taken by the Rajiv Gandhi led government
after the verdict to Sahabanu case. After the implementation of the verdict of
district court, the demand for building the temple went on. During February
1989 the world famous Kumbh fare was going on and it was announced that after
nine months the temple building work will start. It gave the momentum to the
spirit of the Hindu religious community and they assembled to build the temple.
Under the active supervision of Viswa Hindu Parishad the participation was
coming from all corners of the country. People were writing Sri Rama on the
bricks and gathering all those bricks to use that in making the temple. On 17th
October 1989 the VHP went to meet home minister Bhuta Singh and make sure that
there will be no issue while making the temple. Then the government agreed on
the demands of the VHP leaders. Then the inauguration worked was done in the
active presence of home minister of Bhuta Singh and the chief minister of Uttar
Pradesh. Muslims were against of that inauguration and they were protesting but
nobody cared about them. After that inauguration the communal status of country
has already been disturbed. In that particular year almost 706 riots were done
and 1174 people were killed. Bhagalpur of Bihar was the most affected place of
those riots and after two days of the Bhagalpur event Rajiv Gandhi visited on
26th October 1989.the riot went on for two months and 1000 people
have lost their lives. Most of the dead persons were belonging to the Muslim
community. Finally, on 3rd November 1980 Rajiv Gandhi visited
Faizabad and he talked about to bring Rama Rajya. He was on the election
campaign and prior to that he was accused of the Bofers scam. He was challenged
by his friend and ex defence minister Viswanath Pratap Singh. But the soft
Hindutva policy of Rajiv Gandhi led congress party didn’t attain any sort of
success and congress party lost the general election 1989 to the opposition.
This time BJP was supporting the ruling party from the outside. The government
of VP Singh was on the centre and BJP was in support of that. The new
government gave the assurance to both the community that let give few time to
the new government and the government will find a solution to the problems
related to the controversial monument. Before the government to take any sort of
move on the issue of Ajodhya, on 30th October 1990 the saints of the
Hindu community declared to build the temple. During that time VP Singh was
announcing the recommendations of Mandal commission for the backward cast and tribes.
So BJPP thought that this government is not more concerned about the issues of
Ajodhya, so Lalkrishna Advani of BJP declared for a car festival of ten
thousand kilometres from Somnath to Ajodhya on 25th November 1990.
The government was not worried about the car festival at the initial stage but
the Rama Mandir issue was getting the momentum with days passing the car
festival. So on 23rd October 1990 Lalkrishna Advani got arrested by
the police. So the BJP taken away their support from the government. Then it
was Chandrasekhar’s government with the support from congress government but it
didn’t last for long. So again in 1991 the general election was held and during
the election campaigning Rajiv Gandhi was killed by the suicide bomber. But
after the election it was again the congress party which came into power under
the leadership of senior congress leader PV Narasimha Rao. But BJP also could
able to won few state elections as well. BJP won the state election of Uttar
Pradesh and Kalyan Singh became the chief minister. He was determined to build
the Rama temple in that controversial place. And with that the mission to
building the Rama temple of Sangh parivar. After fifteen days of Kalyan Singh’s
visit to Ajodhya, he took a huge decision that to capture the area of 2.77acre
of the controversial place. And most importantly the state government gave the
controversial land of 2.77 acre on lease to Rama Janmabhumi Nyas trust with
just one rupee. The Muslim community went to court and Allahabad court put the
stay on the work. Pressure was mounting on Kalyan Singh to look of the stay
order by the court. Then the government of the Uttar Pradesh took a move by
levelling the land of the controversial land. One major thing happened on 31st
October 1991, when few people climbed on to the top of controversial land and
stocked the flag and there was no one who could obstruct them. On the other
side in Delhi prime minister and all the chief minister were assemeble in the
Rashtriya ekta Parishad meeting. In which Kalyan Singh talked and admitted that
his govermnet will be supporting to the verdict of the court, so the Rama
Janmabhumi Nyas trust went to supreme court and the court commented that the
safety and security of the Babri mosque is totally in the hands of Kalyan Singh
led government of Uttar Pradesh and the supreme court also gave the direction
to the government of UP to obey the decision of Allahabad high court as well.
after these verdicts from the courts Sangh parivar changed their planning and
they move forward to work out their solution to build the temple. When the
central government tried to send the security staff to Ajodhya then Kalyan
Singh alerted the home ministry that it will lead to civil war. Then PV
Narashimha Rao was trying to find a solution by talking to both the parties but
meantime VHP fixed a new deadline for the temple. That from 9th July
the work will started to resume but just before two days to the deadline VHP
threatened openly that the monuments will be destroyed and the temple will be
fixed for ever. On 9th July almost fifty thousand people were
assembled to start the work and it was against the verdict of the court. At
that time BJP aside his name from the controversy and commented that the
government should talk to the religious organisations and the saints regarding
the solution to the Ajodhya issue. After PV Narashimah Rao’s meeting with the
saints it was decided that the work will be stop for three months and the work
was stopped for three months. The central government had only ninety days to
find a solution to the problem of Ajodhya. Then the prime minister holds a
meeting the members of the VHP and the Babri Mosque Action committee to find a
way out. Then on 30th October BHP called a religion parliament in Delhi
and it was made clear before the gathering that the meeting with the other
party was fruitless and they will be sticking to the earlier demands. Then it
was decided that the temple building work will resume from 6th
December, so on 8th November another meeting was help between the
BHP leaders and the Babri Mosque Action committee and it also went fruitless.
Then home secretary Madhav Godbole suggested the prime minister to send troops
to UP and to stop the upcoming threats and prime minister called Kalyan Singh
to talk for the final time about the controversial land issue, where Kalyan
Singh proposed that give the controversial land to the Hindu’s cause till date
the Muslims didn’t claimed about that land and the state government will
provide some other place to build the mosque. Then prime minister PV Narashimah
Rao placed that proposal of Kalyan Singh before the cabinet. Then it was
decided to held a meeting of Rashtriya Ekta Parishad but unfortunately it was
BJP which expelled that by showing a cause that this issues have already been
addressed earlier as well. Then prime minister wanted the report from the UP’s governor
about the status, so that he could dissolve the Kalyan Singh government. but
prior to the report submission of UP governor, UP government appealed for the
quick decision on the land acquisition of the controversial land. So the
governor talked to the prime minister and conveyed him that in this situation
it will not be goo to submit the report and prime minister agreed to the
consent of the UP’s governor. But the court was postponing the date till 11th
December and in the other side the people were started to gather in Ajodhya. On
5th December 1992 senior BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee and
Lalkrishna Advani hold a big rally and there Atal Bihari Vajpayee talked about
the levelling of the land. Finally, 6th December 1992 came and 12:00
pm was fixed as the time to resume the work of the temple. During that time
there almost two lakhs were assembled for the work purpose of the temple. At 12:00pm
people started to climb on to the top of monument and started to break it. Then
the people were fully engaged in breaking the monument and the police were like
the spectators because they didn’t have any orders to take any sort of action
against the masses. Just near to that place BJP leaders and VHP leaders were
giving speeches to the masses and they were very much aware about the
incident’s which was happening right in front of them. Most importantly when
these incidents were going on in Ajodhya, even the prime minister PV Narashimah
Rao was also aware about that thing but he was also like a mere spectator.
Question often comes into the minds of many persons that why didn’t the prime
minister take any sort of action against the saddest happenings in Ajodhya.
Within few hours all parts of the monument have been destroyed and the people
were doing without any fear because UP government has given a written letter
order to the police that not to fire any public member. No one has taken the
blame on to their heads and finally an in humanistic incident has been recorded
in the Indian History. After destroying and levelling the place of monument by
seven o clock in the evening the idol of Lord Rama, Lord Laxman, Devi Sita and
Lord Hanuman ji were placed which was fixed by the temple’s proposed map. Then
the work of the making the temporary temple started as everything was
pre-planned before and like it was scripted earlier. The most important thing
is the monument was destructed by the people when Kalyan Singh government was
ruling in UP and the temporary temple was built when president rule was already
imposed in UP. But this was not the solution to the Ajodhya issue, it went on
to riots and killings of common individuals all over country, almost two thousand
people were killed after the destruction of the monument. After that election
was held and BJP backed highest seats but fail to keep majority so only for 13
days the government lasts, then after two years Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the
prime minister of the country but still the original temple has not able to
come up.
